Job Title: Tutor Manager

Salary: Up to £40,000 depending on experience

Reporting to: Director of Education

As part of its on-going commitment to progress, Gem-A is now looking to appoint a new full time Tutor Manager at its headquarters in London. Located in the heart of London’s historic jewellery district, this is an exciting opportunity to be an integral part of a successful and growing global organization, with excellent prospects for the right candidate.

Primary Role and Responsibilities:

  • Managing the full and part-time tutor team to ensure appropriate tutors for each teaching session and ensuring cover-replacements if necessary.
  • Assessing tutor teaching and offering feedback – Internal Quality Assurer (IQA).
  • Assisting in verifying Accredited Teaching Centre (ATC) validity.
  • Input in Tutor hires in association with the Director of Education.
  • Ability to present seminars, workshops, lab classes and longer term courses of study at Gem-A London, predominantly in the event that cover is required.
  • Being part of the development of new one-day workshops or short seminars and contributing to special projects.
  • Contributing to update and development of Gem-A’s Course materials.
  • Coordinating the Tutor team in creating new workshops and courses.
  • Developing, maintaining and delivering a CPD programme for the Tutor team.
  • Coordinating the tutor team and gemstone curator in regard to acquisition of collection materials and their allocation and curation.  Oversight of Gem-A’s teaching and student stone collections.    
  • Authoring articles for in-house/external magazines and social media.
  • Evening duties will be required as part of the normal 35 hour working week for IQA and tutor cover when required.  Occasional weekend working may be necessary for attending events, for example.  Remuneration will be agreed in advance with either time off in lieu or additional payment.

The ideal candidate will have:

Essential:

  • Gem-A’s Diploma in Gemmology and Gem-A’s Diamond Diploma with a thorough understanding of their contents
  • Experience within a teaching environment, facilitating and delivering both face-to-face and online educational programs as well as managing teaching staff.
  • Excellent communication skills with a strong focus on delivering an engaging learning environment for students.
  • Willingness to undertake CPD.
  • Ability to travel to represent Gem-A at trade events and seminars on a national and international level.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel to represent Gem-A at trade events and seminars on a national and international level.

Advantageous:

  • City and Guilds AET Level 3 or higher.  If not held on appointment; Gem-A will provide paid-for training for the course, which will need to be passed within 12 months of joining.
  • Experience in use of advanced Gemmological testing equipment such as Raman, FTIR and EDXRF.
  • At least one year’s experience in the gem or jewellery industry.
  • Experience of developing questions for external examinations.
  • Experience of adult education.
  • Experience of timetabling.
  • Knowledge or experience of an educational platform such as Moodle Developing and managing Continuous Professional Development Programme for professional staff or self.
